Material Selection
My materials pallet is made up a combination of biomaterials that I explored in my own research (Biomaterials Blog) and materials that you can purchase from sustainable companies (Materials Exploration) that align with my materials narrative. All of these materials are made of recycled or waste products found within agriculture.
1. Recycled Agricultural Metal (Screen)
2. Wood Crete (Biomaterial) (Bench Construction)
3. Mogu Floor Tiles (Flooring)
4. Eggcrete (Biomaterial) (Seating)
5. Banana Fabric (Seating)
6. Herbs and other Plants (Decoration)
Materiality Collage
While the overarching theme of my project is based around curved edges there is also the element of linear industrial architecture within the existing building which links to some of the details within my project.
The contrast of curves and straight edges also links to the addition of plants within the scheme.
Material Narrative
Growth and Biophilic design
Part of this project is about how natural growth can lead to human growth and development, linking to biophilic design and the subsequent benefits. By introducing greenery into an otherwise industrial building exemplifies the positive impacts that being around nature can have on the human body. Furthermore the research carried out shows that by being exposed to sustainable practices in communal spaces makes us more likely to use these strategies in our own homes.
Circular Building/Economy and Bio-Materials
The overarching purpose and context of my project revolves around creating a circular economy that benefits the local community as well as helping to improve the world around us. This is linked to the activities included in my design scheme detailed in my major project and now links to the materiality in finding materials that aim to recycle and reuse the waste and unwanted materials within the project to build new projects.
