Existing Materials
The existing building has a relatively small materials pallet that is made up of industrial materials. The main materials are steel (the columns and beams/main structure), concrete (the foundations and floor), corrugated metal (the North wall was never fully finished so is made up of corrugated metal that has bullet holes in it from WW2).
Plaster Casts
As a way of recording the existing materials of the site and the textures and qualities associated with them I used plaster scene to take casts of different details.
Next steps-
I plan to experiment with alternative materials in these moulds, in particular looking at bio-materials that juxtapose the otherwise industrial man made materials within Boat House 4. To understand how they fit into the existing materials I will fill the moulds of Boat house 4 details to compare the appearance.
Results
The casts of these details in other more sustainable bio materials shows how the construction methods could be adapted and combined with newer materials and construction methods to make the building as a whole more sustainable.
